Join the Aorangi Restoration Trust and South Wairarapa locals for a walk along a recently restored track in Aorangi Forest Park. Follow an old logging road to the historic mill site and take in the beauty of the regenerating forest along the way.
Aorangi Forest Park stretches between Martinborough in the north and Cape Palliser in the south, covering much of the Aorangi mountains. By road, the park sits about 80 km south of Masterton and 100 km east of Wellington.
The park is located on Department of Conservation land and features a rich variety of native bush. Beech forest dominates the northern range, while hinau and matai are common in the hardwood forests at lower altitudes. Mahoe thrives on moist soils in gullies and along stream banks. Other species include fuchsia, makomako, heketara, kohuhu, titoki, rewarewa, rimu, and miro, creating a diverse and vibrant landscape.
Walk Format
Meet at 16 Kitchener Street, Martinborough for shuttle transport to the start of this route. The walk itself is a 10km return trip, expected to take 5 hours. It is a fairly easy tramping track – with about 500 metres of more difficult terrain due to the unformed nature of the track and moderate slope at the start. The remainder is gradual slope on a good benched track. We will return to 16 Kitchener Street between 4pm and 5pm.
